The Contemporary at Blue Star is the nonprofit contemporary art organization making its home since 1986 in the wider Blue Star Arts Complex. If you are interested in leasing or First Friday vendor information, please contact the Blue Star Arts Complex directly at 210.354.3775.

The Contemporary has taken Greater SAfer Together Pledge out of care for our community and we are currently operating with the following visitor requirements and procedures in place:

  • Guests over the age of 10 years old should wear face coverings and observe social distancing guidelines while visiting the galleries.
  • Contemporary asks that guests who feel sick or have recently traveled refrain from visiting the space.

Masking and social distancing guidelines are subject to change without notice depending on community health levels and guidance of public health professionals.

Gallery Hours

Visit our exhibitions page for details regarding opening and closing dates of shows to avoid visiting during an installation period when the museum is closed.

  • Wednesdays, 12 – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday – Friday, 12 – 8 p.m.
  • Saturday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Admission

  • The Contemporary at Blue Star offers free admission to our exhibitions and programs. Donations are encouraged to support our nonprofit mission to inspire, nurture, and innovate through contemporary art.
  • The Contemporary is a member of Museums for All
  • Always free – Blue Star Contemporary Members, Military and Veterans, Educators, Lone Star Card holders, and Students with ID. Reciprocal members: San Antonio TechBloc, and Mod/Co Reciprocal Membership Program. Same-day visitors to the McNay Art Museum with valid receipt.
  • The Contemporary likes to promote our nonprofit exhibitions and art education programs. By entering the premises, you consent to interview(s), photography, audio recording, video recording and its/their release, publication, exhibition, or reproduction to be used for news, web casts, promotional purposes, telecasts, advertising, inclusion on websites, social media, or any other purpose by the Contemporary and its affiliates and representatives. Images, photos and/or videos may be used to promote similar Contemporary events in the future, highlight the event and programmatic capabilities of Contemporary. You release the Contemporary, its officers and employees, and each and all persons involved from any liability connected with the taking, recording, digitizing, or publication and use of interviews, photographs, computer images, video and/or or sound recordings.

Accessibility and Special Services

The Contemporary at Blue Star is committed to serving all visitors. The Contemporary is accessible to people using wheelchairs. All galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome. Sign language available upon request. Large-print gallery notes are available upon request. Parking

Street parking is free in the surrounding neighborhoods and visitors can park for free at Brackenridge High School’s parking lot during non-school hours only. The lot is just a short stroll along the Riverwalk to the complex. Other great options include taking the Viva Culture Route (#11) bus, or rideshares such as Uber and Lyft. Feel like biking? SA Bike Share offers numerous docking stations throughout San Antonio’s cultural destinations, in and surrounding the urban core. The Blue Star Arts Complex parking lot is valet only on First Friday beginning at 2pm for a $15 fee.

School and Group Tours

Schools, community groups, and organizations are invited to visit the Contemporary at Blue Star and take advantage of our tour program. Guided discussions provide students with an understanding of contemporary art and encourage critical thinking concerning everyday life. Learn more about the exhibitions through hands-on activities in our Art Learning Lab.

Schedule a tour
Schools and other groups may schedule a tour of any exhibition, free of charge. Please schedule at least 10 days in advance of your visit.

Venue Rentals

The Contemporary at Blue Star is a dynamic setting for ideation sessions, retreats, and special occasions. Corporate Members receive annual benefits, including access to the Contemporary’s galleries for private events.
