Contemporary at Blue Star is pleased to present Veo Mis Huesos, a video installation by Thomas Georg Blank, guest curated by Dr. Angelika Jansen and presented in celebration of San Antonio’s newest Sister City, Darmstadt, Germany, in collaboration with the Lone Star Art Alliance and the City of Darmstadt. This exhibition is an official Tricentennial Partner event.
Through the soundscape of one of the world’s most densely populated regions,Veo Mis Huesos is a song for Mexico City. Blank uses improvised music by musicians to visualize structure and chaos.
When describing the work Blank states, “Only sound can reach the bones – bones never see a canvas or taste a delicious meal, but sonic vibrations can and will find their way. Sound can’t be stopped by surfaces—when its waves hit an obstacle, they immediately start shaking it. Used in medical devices, ultrasonic waves make visible what is hidden under the skin.
A musician featured in the work repeatedly expresses that exact moment: “Y justo cuando jugamos, aquí arriba, sucede algo. Las superficies se abren, veo mis huesos.” (And justly when we play, up here, something happens. The surfaces open, I see my bones.)”
Contemporary at Blue Star’s summer exhibitions are accompanied by a full complement of all ages programming, including live performances by participating artists; public dialogues; hands-on workshops; an H-E-B Family Saturday, Contemporary at Blue Star’s film series, Film Friday; and access to self-led activities for all ages in Contemporary at Blue Star’s Arts Learning Lab available to the public during Contemporary at Blue Star’s gallery hours.
Artist Bio
Thomas Georg Blank, born 1990 in Germany, was first trained in cultural and media education focusing on photography before studying art in Karlsruhe and Mexico City. He currently lives in Darmstadt and Karlsruhe, is a member of Darmstädter Sezession and has had several exhibitions in galleries and museums, including Hek Basel, Historisches Museum Frankfurt, Kunsthalle Darmstadt, Kunstverein Pforzheim and C/O Berlin. His works have been awarded many times and starting in September 2018 he’ll be a scholar of DAAD as a research fellow at UC San Diego.
