Rites of Passage: Quiceañeras, Debs, and Other Queens
Jul 7–Aug 4, 2000
Rites of Passage: Quinceañeras, Debs, and other Queens was curated by Alejandro Diaz and exhibited artworks from artists Pope Alice, Phillip Avila, Agosto Cuellar, Mary Beth Edelson, Armando Flores Luna, Danny Geisler, Danny Hobart, Shady Lady, Tracy Moffatt, Jannette Morales, Carolee Schneemann, Ethel Shipton, Anne Wallace, and David Zamora Casas. Inspired by the theme of the Quinceañera, the Contemporary commemorated its 15th anniversary with an exhibition featuring the work of Texas and New York artists. The exhibition explored issues surrounding the rites of passage and initiation, the representation of girls and women in pop culture, the changing role of women in their ethnic communities, and the relation between pageantry, parody and Kitsch.
