Pedro Lujan: Inframundo
Nov 15–Dec 29, 1996
Pedro Lujan: Inframundo was curated by Tomás Ybarra-Frausto and exhibited artworks from Pedro Lujan. The paintings and sculptures of Pedro Lujan manifest a constant search for the unity of the outside world and the inner-self of the artist. Lujan’s works are at one ephemeral and eternal, their materiality composed of wood, canvas, and paint is evanescent, while their symbolic content mediating between the conscious and the unconscious remains perpetual. Ybarra-Frausto wrote of Lujan’s work, “Like most contemporary visual culture, Lujan’s creations negotiate and share affiliation with diverse historical art movements. Affinities range from Funk Art and Arte Povera to Kinetic Sculpture and vernacular sculptural traditions from the Southwest such as Santero and Penitente art.” A dominant aspect of Pedro Lujan’s art is the persistent attempt to conciliate the boundaries between the natural world and the psychic inner reality of dreams and fantasies. His works are portals between world opening into a cosmos of reveries and enchantment.
