Mono: Scenes from Nowhere

Sep 29–Oct 10, 2004

Mono: Scenes from Nowhere featured artworks from Southern Californian artist Christina Benavides. Benavides spent several years doing photo and film production work while reserving weekends for photo-expeditions to places that have all but disappeared from the maps. “I’m intrigued by the built environment and by the traces people leave behind once they’ve gone away. It’s interesting to see how the meaning of a place changes as that place is adapted for different uses by the series of users. I think it’s important to be well-rounded with regard to one’s influences. Galleries are important, but there are so many Ideas to be gleaned from everyday stuff like movies, magazines and strip malls.” -Christina Benavides
