Insectinsight incorporated the use of Ansen Seale’s invention, a digital panoramic camera, and showcased his photographs. The camera captures a vertical slit of its surrounding scene over and over in rapid succession, in effect, swapping the horizontal dimension of the photo for the dimension of time. Instead of mirroring the world as we know it, the camera records a hidden reality. The apparent “distortions” in his images all happen in-camera as the image is being recorded. Ansen Seale explored spaces in between theory, technology and image, and managed to maintain an edge of pure formalism in this body of work.
