Elvis?

Aug 31–Oct 8, 2006

Elvis? exhibited artworks from Patty Carroll, with large scale prints of Elvis, silk Elvis scarfs, signed by Elvis impersonators, a wall of densely-packed close-ups of different facsimile inscriptions of Elvis himself, an installation of photographs essentially a ‘kit of parts’- all the bits needed to be Elvis, a portable Elvis altar, a plaster bust of Elvis, and more. This show was about the transfer of personality- people becoming someone else (The King). Carroll began photographing Elvis Tribute Artists because of an interest in making portraits of people who live out their inner life in some visible way. Reinvention of identity is intrinsic to the American spirit, which the impersonators richly demonstrate. Elvis lives within our hearts and culture, and commands attention from all kinds of artists. This was Patty Carroll’s tribute.
