For his exhibition Gesamtkunstwerk, Jesse Amado collaborated with Alexandra Alvarez to develop a performance, sharing the same title. Drawing from varied sources— including artists who have influenced both Amado and Alvarez, topics of gender fluidity, sexual identity, immigration, US and global politics, and more— this performance is a distillation of Amado’s experiences abroad for the Contemporary at Blue Star Berlin Residency Program at Künstlerhaus Bethanien. Through symbolic gesture and collaboration, Amado also highlights how relationships aid in reflection, growth, and transitional moments in life.
Jose Villalobos’ performance, Ni de aquí, ni de alla, pero siempre regreso arrastrado, investigates living in an in-between state, neither from here or there, yet tradition seemingly always reels one back in. This work is a reflection of not being ‘American’ enough, nor being ‘Mexican’ enough while addressing the artists homosexuality and the expectations created by family and traditional values.
While down here you can check out all of the other happenings in the Blue Star Arts Complex and grab some dinner.
