Human Form and Condition by Leo Barrios presents a collection of 5 new sculptural furniture pieces. This new series is inspired by the themes of material, surface, the body, and human relationships. Barrios considers surface and marks of our physical bodies as a parallel to the material of wood– a body, its skin, broken and blistered, scarred and healed. Here, furniture expresses how, despite all the physical differences that may set us apart, we humans have shared and intertwined experiences. The pieces ask us to consider the beauty in differences. Barrios embraces the variations in shape, color, imperfect marks, and damages to his material. He hopes we can do the same as humanity, to live with and embrace difference, scars, disability, and the uncertainties of our human form and condition. This is a philosophical approach to his craft. This series marks a shift in Barrios’ practice to exploring more conceptual and sculptural pieces of furniture and functional objects.
This presentation is an auxiliary 2025 Red Dot program and will be on view October 3, 2025 – January 4, 2026. A portion of proceeds from the sale of the work will support the Contemporary at Blue Star.
