Twisting and Turning

May 16–Jun 22, 2003

Twisting and Turning: abstract painting now was curated by Lilly Wei and exhibited artworks from Nate Cassie, Christopher French, Arturo Herrera, John L. Moore, Thomas Nozkowski, Kimberly Squaglia, and Natasha Sweeten. The painters in this show negotiate the once antagonistic divide between abstraction and representation with aplomb, even insouciance. Dedicated to a range of sensuous form and varying degrees of anecdotal content, each artist, in his or her distinctive way, offered a critique of modernist formalism. According to BIll FitzGibbons, “Twisting and Turning is an excellent example of the eclectic approach in which artists are approaching abstract painting today.”
