Viewfinder: Contemporary Art from Spain
Apr 26–Jun 18, 1999
Viewfinder: Contemporary Art from Spain was curated by Fernando Castro Flores and Victor Zamudio-Taylor and presented new work by four of Spain’s most outstanding emerging artists: Carmen Cantón, Paco Cao, Maité Centol, and lván Rodríguez. Dialogue and counterpoint were the organizing principles of the project, with an emphasis on the artists’ and curators’ distinct expertise and bodies of work. All shared a common link to Ibero-American culture, and the doublefocus of looking and going ‘back and forth’ from Spain to Texas. From the spatial and conceptual distances of geography and culture emerges a cross- Atlantic dialogues that emphasizes proximity and reciprocity. Ideas thus come to be circulated on a transnational level, thereby altering established paradigms of cultural engagement and appreciation.
