Featuring Jenelle Esparza

Contemporary at Blue Star Art Museum announces “Ancestral Archetypes,” an exhibition by San Antonio, TX based artist Jenelle Esparza, from July 2 through August 3, 2014. An Opening Reception will take place Wednesday, July 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and is open and free to the public. A First Thursday reception will be held the following evening, July 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

BIOGRAPHY:

Jenelle Esparza is an artist originally from Corpus Christi, TX. She received a BFA in photography from UTSA in 2010 and continues to exhibit annually. Though primarily a photographer, she also works in multi-media installation and creates abstract photo-based pieces. Her work was recently included in the inaugural exhibit Contemporary Latino Art: El Corazon de San Antonio at Texas A&M University San Antonio-Educational and Cultural Arts Center. She currently manages her photography studio and works for local artists and arts organizations.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Currently I work with the inherent textures of humans and nature to show their archetypal qualities that are encrypted in everything natural. There are stories written in the lines of our palms and in the tree trunks, leaves, and mountain ranges of the world. As I work with this subject I find myself studying the ancestry and identity of people, land masses, and other organic forms of life through their inherent textures and recognizing their connectedness. In this series, Ancestral Archetypes, I continue this ongoing theme using the silhouetted figures of real people paired with the gardens, plants, and natural surroundings near their homes and attempt to tell the stories of a few women subliminally through their enigmatic shadows.
