Join us in Blue Star’s Main Gallery from at 6pm for an artist talk by Art in the Garden sculptor, Richard Hunt. Richard will return to San Antonio from Chicago to celebrate his offsite exhibition at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, which closes at the end of January. Following Richard’s talk visitors are invited to stay to talk with Richard one on one, and spend time with our current exhibitions. This is a Dreamweek featured event and is free and open to the public. Dreamweek is a citywide celebration of organized events leading up to MLK day. Find out about more Dreamweek events here.
Born in Chicago in 1935, Richard Hunt is a world-renowned sculptor. While a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased his piece Arachne. In 1962 he was the youngest artist to exhibit at the Seattle’s World Fair. Hunt was also the first African American sculptor to have had a major solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
His work can be found in numerous museums and both public and private collections, including the Art institute of Chicago, the National Gallery and National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1968 he was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson as one of the first artists to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the governing board of the National Endowment for the Arts. He has received many fellowships, prizes and awards and holds fifteen honorary degrees from universities all over the country. In 2009, Hunt was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Sculpture Center.
