Join Blue Star Contemporary for our most-beloved fundraiser, the annual Red Dot Art Sale!
Now in its 31st year, Red Dot is BSC’s annual art sale fundraier supporting the nonprofit’s dynamic contemporary art exhibitions, education programs like the MOSAIC Student Artist Program and Creative Classrooms, professional development programs for artists, and numerous community outreach efforts while remaining a favorite celebration of local artists, collectors, and contemporary art enthusiasts.
Red Dot supports San Antonio’s artists and its longest-running space for contemporary art through sponsorship and art sales. With more than 100 artworks offered for sale with the proceeds equally shared between the contributing artists and BSC, Red Dot introduces San Antonio artists to collectors by fostering relationships, cultivating the arts community, and enriching the creative economy. Support for the local arts community is central to the vision for Red Dot in 2021. After a historic year, we’ve seen a need for our community to come together and have witnessed the power and potential when it does. This year, Red Dot is a celebration of place: the artists, the people, the support system that sustains our arts and culture community in San Antonio.
Red Dot has grown from a one-night only art sale and celebration to a large-scale survey show of artists working in San Antonio. In 2020, BSC debuted the Red Dot Show, an extended presentation of the artwork contributed by San Antonio artists, open free to the public. The Red Dot Show allows for greater accessbility and opportunities for connection between our audience and the participating artists, and provides BSC with a platform to offer public programs and education initiatives highlighting Red Dot’s honorary and participating artists.
WAYS TO BECOME INVOLVED:
AS AN ARTIST — Submit your artwork to the Red Dot Open Call for consideration by Red Dot Collectors and potential inclusion in the Red Dot Show. BSC shares submitted artworks with Red Dot Collectors, supporters who commit to purchasing an artwork in advance of Red Dot. Red Dot Collectors and Collected Artists receive special recognition throughout Red Dot, anbd Collected Artists have the opportunity to exhibit a secondary work in the Red Dot Show. Artists who are invited to participate in the Red Dot Show are chosen after the deadline for Red Dot Collectors has passed.
The 2021 Red Dot Open Call is now accepting submissions through April 30, 2021. Click here for more info.
BECOME A COLLECTOR — Blue Star Contemporary evenly shares all proceeds from art sales with participating artists. Red Dot Collectors directly support San Antonio’s artists and BSC with their commitment to collecting a specific artwork of their choosing prior to the Red Dot Show. With the distinction of having their work purchased in advance of the Red Dot Show, Collected Artists are then asked to contribute a secondary artwork to the sale.
Collectors enjoy artist profiles delivered to their inboxes and may preview artwork for sale. All art sales up to $5,000 are eligible for Blue Star Contemporary’s annual sales tax-free holiday. This year’s deadline for Red Dot Collectors is August 6, 2021.

THANK YOU TO OUR 2020 RED DOT HONOREES AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
Honorary Artist César A. Martínez
San Antonio-based artist César A. Martínez is widely recognized as a major figure in the Chicano Art Movement of the 1970s and 1980s. His iconic portrait paintings from the Bato/Pachuco/Ruca series combine imaginary sitters and the artist’s depth of knowledge of art history with his lived experiences of life in South Texas. Martínez’s work has been included in the landmark exhibits La Frontera/The Border: Art About the Mexican/U.S. Border Experience, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego; CARA: Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation 1965-1985, organized by the Smithsonian Institute; and Hispanic Art in the United States, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He was honored with a solo exhibtion, and accompanying book, at the McNay Art Museum San Antonio, Texas in 2009. He has also shown at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago; Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; the San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio; and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
Honorary Arts Patron Francesca Billups Mannix
Chair of Blue Star Contemporary’s Board from 2013-2016, Francesca “Francie” Billups Mannix has been a longtime supporter of the arts in San Antonio as a collector and philanthropist. Currently, she serves as co-chair of Blue Star Contemporary’s Advisory Council. Francie grew up in a military family so travel was a part of her childhood, but San Antonio is home. Her mother’s family has San Antonio roots and Francie attended high school there before attending college up North at Wheaton and Williams Colleges, where she studied art history. From there, she worked at Sotheby’s Auction House, Sotheby’s International Realty, and Town and Country magazine in New York. After 13 years in New York and Dallas, she moved back to San Antonio with her husband and three children. Francie, who has her own antiques/accessories business, started The Scout Guide San Antonio and The Scout Guide Hill Country because she wanted everyone to see how unique those areas are.
