Small Wonders: Objects, Memories, Honoring
Sunday, April 12, 2026
11am–3pm
The Contemporary invites visitors of all ages to a poetry workshop and reading facilitated by Jim LaVilla-Havelin and Alexandra Gilliam. This workshop is Inspired by the Contemporary’s Mini Art Museum exhibition, in memory of art educator Mary Cantú.
Participants are encouraged to bring a small object filled with family memories to use as inspiration. Participants will write a poem inspired by their beloved item and combine it with a photo of the object (taken in class) to create their final piece.
Join us as we explore images and objects in words and pictures, reflect on what objects mean to us, how to see some everyday objects in a new light, and how cherished objects hold memories.
This workshop will include a poetry reading of Pablo Neruda’s Ode to things.
