Transcending Limits: Moving Beyond Mainstream and Margin

Sep 20–Nov 12, 1999

Transcending Limits: Moving Beyond Mainstream and Margin was curated by Don Bacigalupi and Michael Ray Charles. This exhibition expanded the limits of the conceptual tropes, “mainstream” and “margin.” From straightforward representation to abstraction, constructivist or minimal expressions, to the ironic and political, the exhibition was an excellent orchestration of contemporary talent that moves beyond the ethnic and gender categorizations too often found in group shows. This exhibition offered an exchange between local arts communities within the context of a new international dynamic toward more diverse approaches to art-making and exhibition practices. The 33 works ranged from the traditional mediums of painting, drawing and sculpture to conceptually-oriented installations, photography and video. The overall imagery and the variety of chosen materials encouraged the viewer to consider the limitless possibilities that both old and new traditions carry in terms of their expressive power.
