Book Launch with Borderland Collective

Join the Contemporary at Blue Star in partnership with The Twig Book Shop as we celebrate the release of Otherwise, It Would Be Just Another River: Ten Years of Borderland Collective’s Practice in Collaboration and Dialogue. The book focuses on the participatory education and socially engaged art practices of Borderland Collective over the last ten years. The book shares stories and collective knowledge about the US-Mexico border created by students, teachers, artists, and community members in an array of Borderland Collective projects through poems, prose, photographs, and drawings.

In 2014, more than 68,000 unaccompanied children from Central America were apprehended on the U.S./Mexico border, double the number from the previous year. The Contemporary’s Executive Director Mary Heathcott and Curator Jacqueline Saragoza McGilvray invited Borderland Collective to develop an exhibition that opened a space for constructive dialogue and exchange around the current Central American refugee crisis along the U.S./Mexico border. The project delved into the long and complicated history of U.S. intervention in which it is irrevocably entangled. From 2014-2018, Northern Triangle traveled to Threewalls in Chicago, Illinois, the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson, the Staniar Gallery at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and the Mayborn Museum at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

We are pleased to commemorate the release of this publication chronicling the impactful projects of Borderland Collective.
